How You Can Make More Money by Posting Your Art on the Internet

Artists who work with oil paints, watercolors and canvases may seem rather old-fashioned with the increasing advancements of computer software designed specifically to draw and paint digitally.

And with a public so hooked on digital creations, artists who work with traditional media find themselves pushed to the sidelines.  Gone are the days when producing art was a practice only the skilled could make a living from — these days, any high school kid with a knack for Adobe Photoshop could create a “painting” that would cost much less than the real thing.  The result?  More work for digital artists and much less for old-school talents.

So how can ‘old-school’ artists start generating enough income to maintain their profession, without giving in to the pressure of turning to graphic software? It may seem somewhat ironic, but the Internet (in all its technological glory) could in fact prove a viable way for artists to boost their fortunes.

Using their own names as their domain names, artists can host blogs which will open an enormous window of opportunity to share their artwork with the world and help them make money online in the process.  Artists should immediately get started on this, for the following reasons:

1. A World Wide Audience

Because artwork on canvas is significantly more difficult to pass around (as opposed to the ease of a JPEG file!), the people who get to view an artist’s work are often restricted to those who have visited the artists workshop or has had the artist send some copies of his work over.

With a website or a blog, however, an artist can easily take digital pictures of his work and put them on his blog, even commenting on the inspiration behind the painting and the techniques used. This would be akin to you – the artists – showing someone around a gallery your work!

Budding artists will find that this method is a great way of launching their work to the public without having to fork over their money to a gallery. With your own website, you can start showcasing your work nonstop to an audience comprising people from all walks of life and from every corner of the globe.

2. Meet Other Artists And Build A Useful Network

It’s always useful for artists to know other artists, as it invariably means that you create more opportunities for yourself and your career. For example, an artist you likes your art and has been invited to show his or her work in an exhibition may help to get your work displayed as well.

By having a presence on the Internet, you will meet a large number of other budding artists like yourself from all over the world, which may prove to be invaluable contacts in the future. You will also allow yourself to be found online by art gallery owners and managers, art collectors and other art aficionados, any of whom may play a role in advancing your career.

3. Sell Art Online

Forget about the starving artist stereotype.  When you have your own blog, you can easily become an artist who isn’t just making masterpieces, but is also earning money.  Just put your art on display and set up an online merchant account so people can view your work and purchase them by going through a simple online credit card transaction.

As an artist, you may not have imagined that you would one day sell products you’ve made yourself, but the truth is that artists have been selling their own work for a long time.  Having your own domain can be an effective way for you to make money selling smaller art pieces, which you can then send to your customers anywhere in the world using a decent courier service. Just selling one piece of work a month can more than cover the cost of running and maintaining a blog!

4. More Opportunities

As your portal to the online community and, essentially, the rest of the world, your own domain is your ticket to better and more profitable opportunities that go beyond mouse-clicking.  After all, you don’t just make money blogging with your own site and domain — your art also gets the exposure it really deserves.

Even though you may be a traditional artist, you shouldn’t forgo all the digital tools at your disposal.  With just one of them – the Internet – you can increase your output and income in untold amounts.
