Video Gaming Addiction – Causes and Results
A person is a video game addict if his priorities change from real life events to in game events. If a person cannot leave his post in front of his computer or console to do chores, he may be a gaming addict. A gaming addict is someone who has the compulsion to try a game and immerse himself in it. The lifestyle of a gaming addict is unique. He refuses to part from his games. His gaming becomes the most important thing to him. The things he buys for himself have something to do with his addictions. There are other signs of video gaming addictions.
Explanations
A person is trained to look forward to something, like the type of behavior described in the Pavlovian system. This response system may be the main contributor to the addiction. A game could make a player feel like going for the rewards at the end of each level. A Pavlovian response has a lot to do with the gratification that comes after a long period of waiting. Because of the increasing reward potential that each level in a game brings, the response becomes more ingrained. Soon, the person finds ways to increase the speed by which the reward is obtained. When a person is compelled to get that reward as fast as he can, he becomes addicted to the game. The addiction starts when the rewards get more and more coveted to the gamer.
Leveling may be the reward, but it can also be virtual items. In multi player role playing games, the adulation of the masses may be the incentive that the gamer is waiting for. Becoming the best player brings out the competitive attitude in these players.
Side Effects of Addiction
An addict becomes isolated and he doesn’t know anything else besides his games. People who get addicted to games don’t notice their lives passing them by. Everything else become so mundane to these players. Gamers isolate their families and friends. In-game achievements become the priority of these gamers. They only want to excel inside the game, not in real life. There are tournaments to prepare for and more levels to complete. Only the best players are allowed to play, which contributes to addiction even more.
