Of all the world-popular Spanish artists, there is one who stood out during the Golden Age of the country when a lot of painters were also making their name on the world. One such reknown master which the world identified as a master in this area of art is Diego Velasquez. Velasquez was known to share a strong friendship with King Philip IV and created a number of famous artworks including his specialty which is portraitures.
Born in a middle class family back in June 5, 1599 and the first chile in a brood of six, Diego Velasquez displayed mush talent as a young artist at a very early age. Quite amazingly, he was able to initiate his lessons with Francisco Pacheco at the age of eleven; Pacheco was also acknowledged as a master painter and he helped develop Diego Velasquez to become a certified painter at a very young age. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with his master’s daughter and chose her as his wife; he settled down in a house he bought through savomhs he made in his paintings and he also purchased another house which he rented out to tenants.
Because of his greatness in the genre and the pieces he produced, Diego Velasquez became well-known all throughout the country and even abroad and also became one of the country’s most influential personalities The Surrender of Breda is an example of his internationally known piece which he produced after he met the Marques de Spinola; it is said that when the painting was shown to Spinola, he was so amazed at how Velasquez was able to expertly paint an expression of emotions through realism which was only initiating the increase of his popularity during those times. Another artwork which may be the most reknowned one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; uniquely, he painted himself inside the painting, quietly working on a canvas at the background.
Diego Velasquez is truly a national treasure, and it is likely that his style had influenced the way painters of the next generations will see the art of painting.
