Of all the world-famous Spanish painters, there is one who stood out during the Golden Age of the country when a number of of painters were also making their name on the world. This artist became respected and popular in many parts of the world and could be acknowledged as one of the most famous if not the most famous Spanish painters of all time—Diego Velasquez. King Philip IV and his chief minister are only a few of the powerful friends Velasquez has; he made paintings for the royal family and to people with position and high nobility, presenting his technique and skills in all his paintings.
In June 5, 1599 in Seville, Diego Velasquez was born, coming from a family of minor nobility and being the first born of six children. At the age of eleven he began studying painting under the tutelage of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen years old, the painter’s guild certified Velasquez as a master painter that permitted him to work as a professional painter. He later selected as his wife the daughter of Francisco Pacheco and supported his new family through his paintings, and because of his brilliance in painting he was able to earn enough money to buy a good house and another house to be rent out.
Because of his talent in art and the pieces he created, Diego Velasquez became famous all throughout the country and even abroad and also became one of the country’s most influential personalities Among his known paintings is Surrender of Breda which he painted when he met Marques de Spinola; the painting signifies the victory of Spinola and it was said that Spinola was dazed and in awe when he saw the painting and cannot believe how amazing Velasquez’ skill is to express emotion through realism in his portraits. Another piece which marked Velasquez’s style was the Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour which is, at the moment, regarded to be one of the most admired paintings in the world; this is also a painting done in the realist technique and the theme had a bit of a political color to it.
Diego Velasquez is truly a national treasure, and it is without a doubt that his style had influenced the way painters of the next generations will see the art of painting.
