Portrait Drawing
There are artists who prefer not to do portraits, being unable to capture emotions, moods, or fleeting moments that register on faces for mere seconds. On the living room walls of a Marion home are portraits made by a self taught artist, who lives there with his wife. His prized piece is called “Faces,” a huge montage of the faces of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends. He creates all kinds of faces to paint by grabbing stills from videos. For a year and a half, he painted the faces of people who meant something to him, making the montage a sort of tribute.
Then he has other portraits, individual ones, of the lead singer of Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter. His favorite tools are pencil, graphite, and charcoal. He wanted to do more than black and white and tried conte crayon and colored pencils next. His first stab at using colored pencils was using himself and his wife, from Kobe, Japan, as subjects. It is a juxtaposition of traditional American drawing and Japanese wood block print. His first embellishment was the inclusion of their three cats, not present at the real wedding. The first cat’s face was drawn like a Japanese opera mask, known to block evil spirits. Good luck comes to those in a certain position, and he draws the second cat in it.
Instead of what they actually wore at the wedding, he drew them in kimonos. He decorated his wife with the kikyo flower, which is her matriarchal symbol. The viewer will also notice a gingko tree, located past the third cat, behind the vertical blinds, outside the room. The idea came for the gingko, which symbolizes longevity, from a tree at the University of Iowa.
The first project the couple had together was the 1997 drawing. He left it to his wife to think up and test new things. His wife says the drawing is one of their prizes. He has never had his own exhibit, but his work has been published, four inside and one cover, in a book. A staff member showed his work to the book editor. The artist received an email of commendation by the editor on his technique, unique combination of portraiture and architecture, and expression of complexity with humor. Whereas action heroes and rock stars were his primary subjects as a child, his present subjects are much more complex. Now, he can adequately express his perceptions on paper. His way of seeing a subject differs from the layman in that he immediately notices changes or additions that can enhance the reality.
