A View on the Days of Diego Velasquez and his Works

A lot of Spanish painters have put a legacy in the world of painting, and during Spain’s Golden Age or what is called El Siglo de Oro; much of the exceptional Spanish painters were recognized. However, one master that truly made a mark and became reknowned is Diego Velasquez; he is considered as a highly respected painter and the most influential person at that time Velasquez was known to have established a strong friendship with King Philip IV and made many popular pieces including his specialty which is portraitures.
In June 5, 1599 in Seville, Diego Velasquez was born, coming from a family of minor nobility and being the first born of six children. As early as eleven years old he began to learn painting and became an apprentice of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen he was certified by the painters’ guild to be a master painter which enabled him to paint as a professional. He married Pacheco’s daughter and continued his paintings that have been his way to earn money; his themes are mostly religious and still life paintings of tavern pieces and he was able to sell his paintings and earned a lot of money which he used to buy a comfortable house for them and another house to be rented out.
Diego Velasquez pursued his painting career and produced a number of amazing paintings; he became popular and even the country’s most influential celebrity. The Surrender of Breda is an example of his internationally popular artwork which he made after he met the Marques de Spinola; it is said that when the painting was shown to Spinola, he was so amazed at how Velasquez was able to expertly paint an expression of emotions through realism which was only initiating the increase of his popularity during those times. However the most well-known piece that Diego painted is Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; it is regarded as the most viewed painting in the whole world, and it is evident that most people who are not very much familiar with Spain’s history in the world of painting knew only one Spanish painter, that is Diego Velasquez, because of Las Meninas.
There are other painters acknowledged to be masters like Diego Velasquez, but the fact still remains that Velasquez was ahead of his time, and that he had contributed much to realism through his numerous popular artwork.
