The Highest Points of the Life and Works of Diego Velasquez

A lot of Spanish painters have put a mark in the world of painting, and during Spain’s Golden Age or what is called El Siglo de Oro; much of the exceptional Spanish painters were celebrated. One such reknown master which the world identified as a master in this area of art is Diego Velasquez. He was King Philip IV’s friend and he also had a good friendly relationship with the king’s chief minister as he was given honor in his works where he has shown his skills and style in all his artworks.
Being the first born of six children, Diego Velasquez was born in a family of middle class in June 5, 1599. Sooner than expected, at age of eleven, Velasquez began his apprenticeship with master painter Francisco Pacheco, and by age eighteen he became a great artist as certified by the painters’ guild which authorized him to work as a professional. He later became the husband of the daughter of Francisco Pacheco and supported his new family through his paintings, and because of his brilliance in painting he was able to earn enough money to buy a good house and another house to be rent out.
He became one of the Spain’s highly acclaimed artist as his works continued to impress a lot of people; the regular citizens as well as the Royal Family and people belonging to the upper class society. One of his many known piece was The Surrender of Breda which he created after he had the pleasure of meeting the Marques de Spinola; needless to say, Spinola was amazed at the amount of details and the way that Velasquez was able to capture the expressions of emotion of the subjects in the piece. Another masterpiece which distinguished Velasquez’s style was the Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour which is, at the moment, considered to be one of the most admired paintings in the world; this is also a painting done in the realist style and the theme had a bit of a political color to it.
