A local female resident of Bridgewater has more than once depicted the beauty of Shenandoah Valley landscape on canvas. This artist has been painting for 36 years and her goal is not just to paint nature and carry around oils and easel in mountain ridges and rolling cornfields. She tells us that the clippings are her way of using black and white again to put back the color, like in the old days. Her plans are to start working on another painting, this time with a snow scene. For her, painting the snow will not even be a challenge. Quite the irony, she only has one or two smaller paintings and the large mural displayed on her home. Apparently, the rest of her countless paintings are either sold or given away. In Hagerstown, Maryland, there is a furniture store that helps her sell her stuff. She is very generous to her friends and neighbors and paints for them upon request. She said she needs a filing system to keep track of how many orders come her way. People like to wrap her paintings and send them out as Christmas presents so she gets more orders during this season.
A nice old lady in her home in Rockingham County got her started to painting when she was 13. Every afternoon she paid 25 cents to the old lady for a lesson. She displayed her first pallet, a small, lightweight board she and her mother fashioned with a drill and paring knife years ago. The old pallet was stained with oil paints, and a note about how it was made has been decoupage on it.
About six years ago, their church has been put down, but she decided to use a family room in their home for remaining items. You get a clear view of the river thanks to the huge glass wall on one entire face of the room, and as the sun filters through you could just see how amazing it is. She said that it was done to bring in the woods and the nature indoors.
As she was making the mural, she was bothered about something that would fit the room perfectly. Her children told her the rustic family room and the bright foliage with rusts, red and gold did not mix well, so she had to redo the mural three quarters through completion. Since anything else will probably just get ignored and the attention of every person will be directed to the mural, which tells how fond she is of painting, she decided to not add anymore pictures in the house.
