Although art on canvas has traditionally been oil paintings, acrylic paintings on canvas are just as popular. Another variety that is more modern is prints on canvas; these are either printed seperately and then mounted onto the canvas, which causes the canvas’ texture to show through, or a giclee, which is printed right onto the canvas.
Some of the appeal of art on canvas lies in the wonderful visual brushstrokes, which may be thick and dimensional or smooth. One way that an art print on canvas can be embellished is with mock brushstrokes; when done well, these can make the print difficult to distinguish from the original painting. If you take a close-up look, you’ll be able to tell whether the brushstrokes are clear or actually colored paints, though (sometimes, rarely, colored paints are used to embellish prints on canvas). Frames for Canvas Art
The time-honored favorite for framing traditional oil paintings was gilded ornate picture frames. Today, there is such a wide variety styles that any frame that suits the art can be appropriate. Because the wooden sides that support the canvas are thick, canvas art looks best when framed in a deep frame or one that is wide enough to hide the protruding canvas. If you can see the canvas protruding behind the frame, it’s not very attractive when hung on a wall.

The full painting shows from the front, and the sides of the canvas may be somewhat visible. One easy way to attach the canvas to the back ledge is to use pieces of adhesive backed hook-and-loop tape.
What Kinds of Borders Can Be Used for Art on Canvas
Sometimes a border is desired between the frame and the canvas art. In this case, a liner is used and not an ordinary paper mat. Most commonly used liners are flat or sloping wood molding that is usually about an inch wide and covered with linen that’s white or off-white.

Putting Glass on a Framed Canvas?
There is much disagreement on how to correctly frame something; one of the areas that people can’t agree on is if art on canvas should be covered with glazing, which can be glass or plastic.
Paintings directly on canvas were traditionally oil paintings, as previously mentioned. An oil painting, when completely dry, would be coated with a clear varnish which would protect it from any dirt that landed on the painting. When the painting showed signs that it was looking dirty, the varnish was taken off and a new layer of varnish was applied, and the canvas would appear new again. Because the varnish protected the painting, there was no need to use glass when framing it and this allowed the viewers of the art to be able to enjoy the texture and brushstrokes of the painting.
If you go to a museum you will find that they use glass to prevent damage to the paintings, but most would ensure that you don’t need to do this at home. Today, in addition to oil paints, art on canvas might include acrylic or mixed media, and could be covered with an unremovable protective varnish. Today’s art on canvas can be fragile and difficult to clean, so some people choose to put it behind protective glazing.
