How to Choose Makeup for Acne
Women with acne understand the challenges of finding the best acne makeup that will cover their blemishes without making things worse. Many products claim to be suitable for those with acne, but often you may end up with new pimples anyway. Everyone’s skin reacts differently to each product and, no matter what the package says, there is no way to really know if a particular makeup is good for you until you try it.
As a starting point, it is helpful to know which products are most likely to be safe for your particular skin type. Follow a few basic guidelines to determine which makeup to avoid and which are possible candidates for your skin. Be prepared for some trial and error on your part before you find your best makeup match.
Knowing what to stay away from is your first step. Be careful of products that contain the following:
- oily or greasy textures
- products with a strong perfume or fragrance
- anything with sodium lauryl sulfate or isopropyl isostearate on the ingredient list
- makeup with bismuth oxychloride
Look for this wording on any product label:
- non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging)
- fragrance-free (as opposed to unscented, which may still contain fragrances)
- hypoallergenic (for sensitive skin)
- non-acnegenic (does not cause acne)
Makeup for acne prone skin comes in several forms. A large number of people prefer mineral makeup. You may have already heard of bare minerals or bare essentials, from the most famous of mineral makeup lines – Bare Escentuals. One of the reasons that mineral makeup is recommended for acne is that it does not contain the quantity of chemicals and irritants of other makeup. It comes in a powder form and is applied with special brushes which buff the powder onto the skin, forming a very natural finish while still providing coverage. Bare Minerals sells a mineral veil which you dust on after putting on the rest of your makeup to absorb oil and help your makeup last all day.
Another popular type of makeup for acne is anything that contains salicylic acid. Acne makeup is often refereed to as skin-clearing or oil-absorbing. Salicylic acid is a popular acne fighting ingredient which helps unblock your pores. Sulfur and tea tree oil are used in some acne makeup since they have bacteria-fighting qualities that prevent pimples from forming. Makeup for acne prone skin that contains skin clearing ingredients will probably not help those with severe acne, though it can help some mild breakouts. In fact, if you are already using another acne treatment, acne makeup with additional treatment ingredients can be too drying.
One of the most effective types of makeup that conceals acne is airbrush makeup, which has the additional benefit of looking very natural. An airbrush system machine is used to spray the makeup onto the skin in a fine mist which feels like a breeze. By coating the skin without clogging the pores, airbrush makeup can be safely used without causing more pimples. The downside is that airbrush makeup can be expensive initially, for the machine. The makeup used in the airbrush makeup machines is priced similarly to other good quality foundations.
While both mineral makeup and airbrush makeup are excellent choices, you can use any good foundation or concealer that is oil-free and non-comedogenic. You will find a number of different forms of foundation, including the most common liquid one. Consider how oily or dry your skin is and how much coverage you need when you choose which formula of makeup to buy. Moisturizing formulas work best for dry skin, though you can always just use a stronger moisturizer. For those of you with oily skin, use a combination of oil-absorbing foundation, finishing powder, and blotting papers.
Think about how important the quality of the makeup is compared to the price, how much you are willing to spend, and the color selection.. Choosing the cheapest makeup will not necessarily save you money in the long run. If you can only afford to buy one item, it pays to spend your money on a good quality foundation or concealer since this is the makeup that comes in closest contact with your skin and is most difficult to match to your skin tone. Some items available in discount stores and pharmacies are good enough quality that you don’t need to spend extra, such as eye shadow, eye liner and lipstick. Rather than worrying about the form or price of makeup you use, focus on buying a safe makeup for acne prone skin, does not make your skin break out, conceals what need to be concealed, and looks great.
