The Benefits Of Castle

Throughout history many people of repute have come to kiss this famous stone which, as one legend would have it, was the stone that Moses struck with his staff to bring forth water for his people during their exodus out of Egypt. It is widely accepted that the stone was given by Robert the Bruce to the King of Munster, Cormac McCarthy, ( Munster is the southernmost province in Ireland that comprises of the counties Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick and Clare) as a reward for his help in defeating the English at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. 132 years later, Dermot McCarthy, then the king of Munster, built the stone into what we now see as Blarney Castle.

Standing about 40 metres tall, roughly the height of a 13 storey modern day building, Blarney Castle can be found in the town of Blarney, approximately 5 miles north of Cork City. Surrounded by acres of mystical land, it’s grounds comprises of streams, meadows, caves, beautiful gardens with a large variety of plant life and features and a lake.

Letting kids, and adults alike, enter into the imaginary geometric worlds they build. Their latest creation, that pays tribute to one of the most beloved characters of a generation, does not disappoint.

With a staggering 1290 pieces (which required three instruction manuals to put together) it’s easy to imagine getting lost in hours constructing this highly detailed toy! Sorting hat, secret chamber, and Gryffindor’s sword are just a few of the items that bring this world to life! With many small pieces, be sure to keep away from both small children (due to choking parts) and pets (due to their chewing parts).

Walking around this timeless treasure of Irish history, a person can’t help but get caught up in a feeling of poignant and historical wonder. A feeling that transports you back to the time of the chieftains and instils a magical and lasting impression of surreal reality. History and folklore, things of fact and of legend that lifts the spirit and imagination of the beholder and fills them with the kind of feeling that Hollywood tries to create in a lot of its movies, but as valiant as it may try, and with a certain amount of success, can never quite do completely.

At least, not in comparison to the very real and personal feeling that overcomes the senses when looking across one of Blarney Castles dew-covered meadows, shrouded in early morning mist shortly after dawn, with the castle standing hauntingly among the trees in the background.

Stopping every now and then, as the narrow and winding stairs took us to different ‘rooms’ in the castle (though the rooms have no ceilings and the castle is basically a shell due to dilapidation over time), I got a real sense of how a particular room may have looked hundreds of years ago. What the occupants may have used the room for and how they interacted in it. A person could almost imagine the banquets they had, the music which filled the halls and the authority that swept through the castle as the King of Munster entered.

Upon reaching the top of the castle, a person can expect to see fine panoramic views over all of the castle’s grounds, the town of Blarney itself, and beyond. The arduous journey up the winding and narrow staircase (which only allows one person at a time to ascent) finally bears fruit and splendid views of this part of the North Cork countryside can be seen. This however, is short-lived because next on the tour,a person is faced with the daunting task of kissing the Blarney Stone!
