Bottle or Breast Feeding Your Baby. Burping and Vomiting. Some Useful Advice
When you bottle or breast feed your baby, he will usually swallow some air along with the milk. The air will then form small bubbles in the stomach, which may or may not lead to some discomfort. The amount of air taken in will differ from baby to baby, but it is more common in bottle fed babies. Whether burping your baby is necessary, is not what I intend to discuss here, as there are two different schools of thought as to whether the fact that you bring up the wind after every feed, makes your baby more happy, but even if it doesn’t, if you burp your baby during a feed it will slow down the feeding process, and that in itself is better for his digestion. If you are going to burp your baby in the middle of a feed, don’t stop suddenly to do it, but wait for him to pause naturally; if he doesn’t, then wait until the end. The most important thing to remember is not to become obsessed that your child has to be winded, as he may fall asleep before finishing his bottle.
So how do you burp a baby? There are three different ways you can try.
The first way is to hold the baby upright on your shoulder, and very gently rub or pat his back between the shoulder blades.
The second method, is to sit your baby on your knee with one hand supporting his chin, and the other hand patting or rubbing his back.
The third method is to lay your baby on your knees, faced downward, and to gently rub, or pat his back. Usually your baby let you know somehow, which position he prefers.
There are a number of reasons why you child could vomit after a feed. The sight of your baby vomiting is never an easy one for any parent, but in general this can be put down to a perfectly simple explanation, and doesn’t mean that your baby is ill. Maybe you have fed him too quickly, or he has been overfed. Another reason for vomiting maybe that he coughs or sneezes just after being fed and this causes the milk to come back up. As a rule of thumb, don’t try to force your baby to ‘finish off the last drop’ of milk. If he has finished and shows no interest just leave it, as he has obviously had enough. Always check the holes in the teats before you bottle feed. If it is too big then it will deliver too much milk too quickly, if it too small then he could be sucking in a lot of air. Both of these problems could make your baby bring up some of his feed.
Remember, that babies grow up very quickly,so enjoy this stage, and don’t get panicky if he falls asleep before you have chance to burp him; pretty soon he will be eating solids, walking around, and beginning to talk, and you will have to adapt to a whole new set of parenting skills.

Handel – Messiah / Augér, von Otter, Chance, Crook, Tomlinson, English Concert, Pinnock $26.99 This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A… |
