Lino Block

A Few Popular Printmakers

Printmakers use color to their prints in many different options. Often color in printmaking which involves etching, screen printing, woodcut, or linocut is applied by using separate plates, chunks or screens or simply by using a reductionist approach. In multiple plate color techniques, a number of plates, screens or blocks are made, each giving a different color. Every separate plate, screen, or block will be inked up in a unique color as well as applied in a particular sequence in order to make the whole image. On average around 3 to 4 plates are produced, yet there are instances in which a printmaker may use up to seven plates. Every application of another plate of color will interact with the color already put on the paper, and this should be considered while creating the separation of colors. The lightest colors will often be implemented first, and then darker colors successively until the darkest.

The reductionist way of producing color is to start with a lino or wood block which is either empty or with a simple etching. Upon each printing of color, the printmaker would then further cut into the lino or woodblock getting rid of more material after which apply another color and reprint. Each successive elimination of lino or wood from the block is going to reveal the already printed color to the observer of the print. Picasso is commonly mentioned as the creator of reduction printmaking, though there is proof of this method being used 25 years before Picasso’s linocuts.

Valenti Angelo was an Italian-American printmaker, illustrator as well as author, born June 23, 1897 in Massarosa, Italy. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1905, living initially in New York City then moving in Antioch, California. At the age of nineteen, Angelo moved to San Francisco, working by day as a labourer as well as devoting his evenings and weekends at libraries as well as museums and galleries. He soon became a versatile artisan and an especially competent engraver as well as printer. Angelo’s preferred medium was the linocut, and his prints depicting urban nocturnes as well as desert scenarios of the American Southwest are significantly sought after by collectors and dealers. In 1926, Angelo made his first book illustrations for the well-known, San Francisco-based Grabhorn Press. In a period of 34 years, Angelo adorned as well as illustrated approximately 250 books. Among these were folio editions of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, The Travels of Sir John Mandeville, and numerous books of the Holy Bible.

Sybil trained in England, and began producing as well as exhibiting linocuts from 1921 until 1939, working regularly with her informal partner Cyril Edward Power. She also helped in the establishment and took over as the first secretary of the The Grosvenor School of Modern Art. She worked as being an oxyacetylene welder in an aircraft factory in World War I, in which she assisted in the creation of the very first all metal aeroplane for the Bristol Welding Company and in the shipyards of the Hampshire city of Southampton during World War II where she became acquainted with Walter Morgan. In England, one of the major collections in public ownership is held by St Edmundsbury Borough Council Heritage Service Bury St Edmunds. This collection includes a selection of early water-colour paintings, executed while the artist was still residing in Suffolk.

Printmaking is a very wide medium in art and can be studied nearly anywhere, in art schools or from printmakers. Once you learn basic principles, you will find there are numerous techniques to create a really great print.
