How To Tie Dye
I’ve loved tie dying ever since I dipped tightly rubber banded t-shirts into tubs of Rit Dye in elementary school. The colours and patterns had been magical, but the fun half was wearing my creation!
Several years later and I was in The Brightside Tie Dye Emporium in Brattleboro, VT. Upon checking out with a bag of goodies, I observed a small signal that introduced that the proprietor was working a category in tie dying. I signed up instantly and shortly realized the mysteries of constructing eye catching, non-fading t-shirts in myriads of colours and patterns. Beyond utilizing the data to create items to promote at native farmer’s markets, I also used it at school and summer time camp so that children could make pleasant items of their own. The satisfaction they confirmed when carrying shirts they made themselves was justified. They were truly gorgeous.
I’m about to explain the method I used with the groups of kids. I am positive there are completely different and higher methods, but this worked nice for me. The dyes to use are Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. I at all times bought mine as a dry powder in order that the dye would have a for much longer shelf life. If you wish to do that on a limited scale, try shopping for three or so colors. Keep in mind, the colors could be mixed! Dyes, chemicals, and squirt bottles could be bought from the source given at the backside of the article, though there are a number of different purveyors, too. Pro just happened to be the company I used. Additionally they promote small booklets detailing learn how to create sure designs are are well worth the few [dollars] they cost. Another materials could also be bought at the local Wal-Mart, Okay-Mart, or grocery store. The hot button is that I wanted the shirts to be non-fading and final a long, long, lengthy time. If fading is not a difficulty, Rit Dyes are far inexpensive and far easier to use. If you wish to create one thing that shall be frequently worn and still stunning three years from now, here is the deal…
Here is our technique for group tie dying. It is loads of work, so roll up these sleeves and enlist the mother or father volunteers!
1) Buy the shirts on sale. We get Massive and Xlarge for sixth graders. I don’t take pleasure under consideration when we do shirts. No one that I’ve met needs a shirt that looks like Spandex! I put several mothers in 4XL, and although they said they’d use them for sleep shirts, they certain regarded snug!
2) You will now need to scrub the shirts to remove any grease that was left on the threads from processing. Wash shirts in HOT water with ¼ cup of washing soda or Professional-Dye Activator and ¼ cup of Synthrapol. Rinse on COLD.
3) Put a special quantity on the tag of each shirt in permanent marker.
4) Make a solution of 5 gallons of tap water to three cups of soda ash or Professional-Dye Activator. You have to four or five batches of this in a single tub. I take advantage of my large sink for this. Add the shirts; as much as 18 at a time, and let sit within the solution for 15 minutes. Sporting rubber gloves, squeeze out and put in washer. Set washer to last spin, and spin with no water coming into tub for rinse. Place shirts in a garbage bag to stop them from drying.
5) Combine dyes with distilled water as much as one week before dying. To 1 quart of distilled water in an previous blender, add the next:
¼ cup of dye
Fuschia
Bright Orange
Golden Yellow
Deep Purple
Raspberry (reddish purple)
½ cup of dye
Turquoise (FOAMS!)
Kelly Green
Cobalt Blue (FOAMS!)
1 cup of dye
Better Black
6) Retailer the dyes in squirt bottles and clean milk jugs.
7) Maintain folded shirts on a “grid desk” when dying.
Wrap shirts in seran wrap. Get this from a kitchen / restaurant provide firm.
9) Let shirts sit wrapped for 2 days.
10) While filling washer (top loading only), take rubber bands off clothes (wear rubber gloves) and toss in washer (12 – 18). Wash and rinse on cold. Then wash on HOT with ¼ cup of synthrapol and rinse cold. Dry in drier.
11) Wash with dark garments the first few instances, but shirt will probably be colorfast.
Dyes and supplies can be found from Pro Chemical and Dye Company of Somerset, MA.
