Exactly What A Film Release Date Can Inform You About A Movie

One of my very first occupations in New York, aside from working in a green screen studio rental  which uses green screen backgrounds, was working for the Gersh Agency, a talent and literary agency, at midtown. In the world of entertainment there are actually the “Big 5″ agencies – William Morris, CAA, Endeavor, IMG and one other whose name escapes me – and then the next level of around 10 more compact agencies. Gersh was anywhere in that next level. They’d have you think they were at the top, however , I am not so sure and did not stick around long enough to confirm one way or the other, anyway.

We did get some major clients, though. David Schwimmer from Friends was our largest breadwinner (out of the NY workplace, at least – the Los Angeles office had even bigger names). Sam Rockwell was also on our list, as were Josh Duhamel and J.K. Simmons. They will all visit the workplace every now and then, and we’d roll out the red carpet so-to-speak, addressing all of them just like a-List stars and working on our very best in order to spoil all of them so they will not run away to some even larger agency.

Just what I came to understand throughout my time there was clearly that a film release date can tell you a whole lot about the film release itself. Agencies do not actually launch motion pictures – studios do – but they have got a few say in it. And it is basically bad news for an agency if one of their star’s movies is released in January or February. Because doing so implies the studio thinks the movie will bomb, and no person would like their celebrity to be in a bomb.

It’s really a simple fact that individuals shell out a lesser amount of money in January and February. Whether that is because it’s cooler throughout most of the country during those months so people stay indoors a lot more, or whether it’s because individuals have less money due to December’s holidays, it’s hard to say. My guess is that it is a bit of both. I believe there’s some truth to this. Directing is definitely an art, and in the event that you don’t have an innate talent for it, then you definitely won’t be any good at that. The top movie schools and education can’t change it out. It’s really no distinct from painting or sculpting; if you cannot do it, you can’t get it done. But it leads to studios dumping movies that they have already produced but feel are crap to the theaters in that two month stretch. Whether or not it’s similar to Denzel Washington’s “Book of Eli” or Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island,” even having the best celebrities or major directors connected won’t save a poor film from a poor film launch.

The flip side is that every single agent would like their client’s motion pictures to be released in the summer time, preferably some time from May until about mid-July. These are known as “tentpole films” considering that the money they make acts as a tentpole to hold up the remaining portion of the studio, and a tentpole movie launch is an excellent means for a celebrity – and their agent – to create their own brand and name recognition.

Swing Kids [VHS]

Swing Kids [VHS]

$9.88

This strange movie with a niche subject–jazz-loving, dance-loving German kids persecuted by Hitler’s men–almost works, thanks to a good cast who seem devoted to the unusual story line. Director Thomas Carter doesn’t bring the necessary stylistic oomph to the musical sequences, something that might have pushed the whole production to another, more interesting level of Hollywood dream. Kenneth Bra…

It’s not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)–not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plast…
