Jacques Hnizdovsky was a Ukrainian-American painter, printmaker, sculptor, ex libris designer, as well as novel illustrator. Jacques Hnizdovsky was born in Ukraine in the Borshchivskyi Raion of Ternopil Oblast to direct descendants of a noble family having the Korab coat of arms. He undertook studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Zagreb, and created numerous paintings, and around 300 prints (woodcuts, etchings as well as linocuts) following his move to the United States Of America in 1949. He was inspired by woodblock printing in Japan in addition to the woodcuts of Albrecht Dürer. These influences on his earlier works can be viewed on his website. Most of his woodcuts, (aside from exhibition posters, which he also printed himself directly from the woodblock) have been printed on washi, which in English is erroneously translated into “rice paper.

Henri Matisse was a French artist, known for his use of color and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, as well as sculptor, yet is famous primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly considered, along with Picasso as well as Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to establish the groundbreaking developments in the plastic arts in the opening years of the 20th century, accountable for major developments in painting as well as sculpture. His competence of the expressive language of color as well as drawing, viewed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern-day art.

Everett Ruess was an artisan and author who looked into nature including the High Sierras, California Coast and the deserts of the American southwest, often alone. His fate while on a journey though a remote section of Utah has been a Western mystery for several years. Ruess was noted for cutting linoleum prints of nature as well as connected with Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange. His prints display scenarios from the Monterey Bay coastline, the northern California coast near Tomales Bay, the Sierra Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.

Hannah Tompkins was an American artist primarily known for her significant body of artwork primarily based on the writings of William Shakespeare. A catalog listing of her Shakespeare themed oil works of art appears in Shakespeare in American Painting: A Catalogue right from the late eighteenth century to the present by Richard Studing. She began painting in earnest in the mid-1960s while instructing art at Ramapo Community College, Rockland County, New York. In 1979, she opened the Shambles Gallery located in Santa Cruz, California and in 1984 opened the Shakespeare Art Museum in Ashland, Oregon.

Printmaking is certainly a broad medium in art and could be learned almost anywhere, in art institutions or from printmakers. Once you know the basics, you will find there are numerous methods to make a really good print.
