HOT IDEAS FOR COOL WINTER FLOWERS
A change of season means a drop in temperature, so why not heat things up with some warm and welcoming fresh flower arrangements?. What better way to heat up the frosty gloom than with the vibrant hot colours of red berries, orange citrus and velvety foliage?
If you’re in the southern hemisphere, this could mean a red-hot centrepiece for a Christmas in July celebration whilst northern hemisphere hearts will melt at the sight of a sizzling festive table adorned with vibrant flowers. But no matter where you are in the world, and no matter what the occasion – this scorching floral idea is bound to get the mercury on the rise!
The starting point is to find a container – preferably rectangular but anything goes really – but it needs to be in proportion to the table that it will be displayed on and not much higher than the champagne glasses . Then get some oasis or floral foam and float it in a bowl of water. This tip from a leading Perth flower delivery specialist will get the best from your florist’s foam…they say you should not try and push the foam under water in an attempt to speed up the absorption of water, but rather let the oasis absorb the water so as to prevent air bubbles from forming. It will then sink to the bottom of the bucket when it has fully absorbed all the water . Then place the oasis in the container and wrap chicken wire over the top.
And now to the fun part ….the flowers!. Try and get a combination of deep green glossy foliage (eg laurel leaves), winter berries such as nandina, holly, hypericum or privet, red roses and some citrus fruit eg oranges. The idea is to keep the colours complementary eg reds, oranges and yellows to create a ‘warm’ look.
The whole arrangement will be a low one, so cut the flower stems quite short. As a starting point, put some of the berries at each end of the container with some of the leaves in between. Now put another type of berry in two groups in the centre. Push a sharp stick or skewer into the oranges and clump these together in groups of three, in differing heights. Finally, fill in with the flowers. Use your own imagination, but a general suggestion from the Perth florist is to group flowers in threes, perhaps with roses in the centre and gerberas towards the ends.
Another tip from this leading florist in Perth is to extend the life of gerberas by cutting around a centimetre off the bottom of the stems and placing the newly cut stems into a few inches of boiling water until air bubbles emerge. This process should take around ten seconds – then place immediately into cool water.
Another idea is to add cones or pods that have been spray painted in festive colours (silver, red, gold) to create your own special style.
Your local online florist in Perth will have a huge variety of different flowers for you to experiment with – otherwise you can simply choose any one of their stunning arrangements as a fresh flower delivery to save you the time and trouble of creating your own!.
