A lot of Spanish painters have put a mark in the world of painting, and during Spain’s Golden Age or what is called El Siglo de Oro; several brilliant Spanish painters were acclaimed. One such reknown master which the world recognizes as a master in this area of art is Diego Velasquez. He was alleged to be good friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister, as he was acclaimed by his pieces, showcasing his talents and style in every portrait he has done.
Diego Velasquez’s family was a minor nobility during their time; he was born on June 5, 1599 and was the eldest child in the family with five younger siblings. During his early years he began studying the art of painting and when he reached age eleven, Master Painter Francisco Pacheco became his master and his progress was very fast and by time he reached eighteen years old he was already a master painter, certified by the painters’ guild and with it he can paint as a professional. Velasquez later on became the husband of Pacheco’s daughter and earned money by painting with religious themes and creating still life paintings of tavern pieces; through it he gained a large sum of money and bought a nice house for them and another house to be rented out.
Because of his brilliance in painting and the pieces he created, Diego Velasquez became popular all throughout the country and even abroad and also became one of the country’s most influential personalities One famous painting that he did when he met Marquez de Spinola is the Surrender of Breda; the painting illustrates the victory of Spinola and when it was shown to Spinola he was captivated and greatly admired the brilliance of how Velasquez captured such emotions and expressed them through realism in his portraits. Another creation which could be the most famous one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; interestingly, he painted himself inside the piece, quietly working on a canvas at the background.
Diego Velasquez is truly an exceptional artist, his paintings up to this generation are being studied and analyzed; he is really one of Spain’s great masters of painting.
