Painting Tips: Color Schemes

In the wake of the proliferation of home improvement shows, i.e. “Redecorate Your Neighbor’s House”, that flourished in the early 2000’s, the sleepy world of off-white interior color schemes was turned upside down by a rainbow assault of the bold and bright shades ripped from the pages of long neglected color wheels.  I am a firm believe in the old saying, “the customer is always right.”  Thus, I gamely painted kitchens Dijon, nurseries Salmon, and living rooms any number of tan colors called anything but tan.   Sometimes the color schemes were a homerun.  Other times, well, not so much.  Word to the wise; if it looks like the secret sauce of your local burger joint, you may want to reconsider.  Here are some other guidelines you may want to consider.

  1. Sometimes, less is more.  The best thing that came out of the 2000’s “color explosion,” is the accent wall.  It is an excellent way to get a little crazy, and with relatively little risk.  For instance, the wall in your dining room with the two Monet prints and the candle sconces would look beautiful with a little Snip of Tannin.
  2. On ceilings, white is never off.   If you want to go for it, and paint the whole room with that gorgeous Sailor’s Blue, absolutely do not paint the ceiling with that color.  Darker colors (anything but white) on the ceiling make the room close in on its self.  Unless you enjoy the feeling of being held under a sleeping bag, than keep the ceiling white.
  3. Trust your instincts, sort of.  Even if your friends look at you sideways when you tell them what colors you are thinking about using, go with your gut.  After all, what do they know?  They probably liked picture murals in the early eighties.  That said, some caution would be wise.  Most paint suppliers will offer free samples, or quarts of paint for much less than a gallon.  Experiment a little before your pull the trigger.

I hope this tip was useful and helps you produce a beautiful and professional finish on your home. Remember, a fresh coat of paint on the exterior of your home adds a great deal to the curb appeal and value of your home.

Charlotte Brontë’s Victorian romance is no stranger to the silver screen, but Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga’s affecting and beautifully mounted adaptation is among the best. It’s always a small surprise to revisit this movie and realize what a subtly dark performance James Stewart gives as an alcoholic who claims he keeps company with a six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit.
