Outdoor Paper Lanterns

The Mid-Autumn Pageant, also called the Moon Pageant and the Chinese Lantern Competition, is held on the 15th day of the eighth month within the Chinese lunar calendar. This normally happens round late September or early October when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest.

The Mid-Autumn Competition is the most important festival within the Chinese calendar, other than the Chinese language New Yr and Winter Solstice (often known as Dongzhi Pageant), and is a national vacation in some countries.

Traditionally, throughout the Mid-Autumn Festival, farmers have a good time the tip of the summer time harvesting season on this date. Chinese members of the family and pals gather to admire the brilliant mid-autumn harvest moon, and luxuriate in moon truffles and pomelos together.

Overthrow of Mongolian rule

According to Chinese folklore, the Moon Pageant commemorates an uprising in China against the Mongolian rulers of the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368) within the 14th century. Group gatherings have been forbidden by the Mongolian rulers and it was inconceivable to orchestrate a rebellion.

As the Mongolians did not partake in the eating of moon cakes, the rebel leaders came up with the idea of timing the riot to coincide with the Moon Festival. They distributed thousands of moon truffles to the Chinese residents in the city and cleverly inserted inside each moon cake a bit of paper with the message: “Kill the Mongolians on the 15th day of the 8th month.”

On the evening of the Mid-Autumn Pageant, the rebels efficiently attacked and overthrew the Mongolian government. Following the overthrow of the Mongolian government was the establishment of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). On account of the profitable rebellion, the Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated with moon muffins on a national level.

Mid-Autumn Festival in London

Gerrard Road was the main point of interest of the Moon Festival in London and Chinatown was lit up by 1000′s of orange paper lanterns to mark the occasion. Thousands of native Chinese language and guests from everywhere in the world have been there to participate within the anxiously awaited annual event. Many children were sporting the traditional shiny colored Chinese costumes and they look pretty in them.

This occasion was organised by the London Chinatown Chinese language Affiliation and was held on Sunday, 11th October, a week later than common, to coincide with the London Restaurant Pageant (eighth – 13th October 2009).

An outside stage was setup on Macclesfield Avenue, going through Gerrard Street. The opening ceremony began at 1.00pm with the ever-widespread lion dance. The afternoon’s performances were a combination of traditional and modern entertainment together with a lion dance, martial arts, Chinese language conventional music, hip-hop dance and Hong Kong Canto-Pop. Items were distributed to those that participated in quizzes or were courageous sufficient to go on stage to offer a performance. There were additionally food tasting, candy and noodle-making courses and even a Chopsticks Challenge.

28 Chinatown eating places participated in the London Restaurant Pageant and provided mouth-watering special menus of Oriental cuisines at special prices. Elsewhere Chinese language community stores have been set up to sell Chinese language merchandise and those selling paper lanterns and fans seemed to have performed very effectively on the day. And so did the lion who danced from one shop to another offering luck to the Chinese business community.

The Mid-Autumn Festival in London was clearly enjoyed by everyone. There was a lot fun and laughter and even the drizzle close to the top didn’t dampen the spirits of those that participated in this 12 months’s event.
