Ban High Fructose Corn Syrup:Read about the dangerous of this common ingredient and sign our petition
Recently, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has been the subject of much debate and has been demonized, as more research uncovers the ill effects it has on our health. The sugar industry’s response to this increased awareness has been to mount a sophisticated media campaign in defense of HFCS, which includes television commercials, viral videos and even twittering. The industry’s main portal to their campaign is http://www.sweetsurprise.com/ and it is chock-full of distortions, misrepresentations and outright lies. The big debate: “Is HFCS really worse for you than sugar?” The answer is, “of course it is.” To say that I don’t advocate sugar is not a small understatement; in fact, I think both sugar and HFCS are downright dangerous for your health especially in the quantities consumed in our modern diet.
Webster’s dictionary defines the word “refined” as “purified.” A more adequate description when referring to sugar and HFCS would be: “concentrate, bleach, process at high temperatures, concentrate, strip of all nutrients, concentrate further and call it food!” Calling sugar and HFCS “refined” as in “purified” is ludicrous! But let me play devil’s advocate for a moment and tell you why sugar is definitely the lesser of the two evils.
What it all boils down to: HFCS is metabolized by your body in a completely different way than sugar. HFCS is 55% fructose and 45% glucose, while regular sugar (sucrose) is 50% each glucose and fructose. Seems like they are pretty much the same right? Wrong! The fructose in HFCS is not from a fruit, it’s highly refined, man-made fructose. It is a starch and it doesn’t exist in nature. It is chemically refined into an artificial hydrocarbon, and your body does not even recognize it as food! Sucrose is recognized by the body, and processed differently.
When you eat sugar, your body converts it into glucose, which raises your blood glucose levels, stimulating insulin production, which turns glucose into energy by moving it out of your blood and into your cells. Eating sugar also causes your body to produce leptin, a hormone that turns down appetite and increases your metabolic rate. When you eat HFCS, your body does not stimulate the production of either insulin or leptin. The fructose in HFCS goes directly to your liver, where it is way more likely than sucrose to be metabolized into fat, which raises triglyceride levels. Also, HFCS has been shown to suppress gherin, a hormone that signals satiety (satisfaction and fullness). The result of ingesting HFCS is that you are left exhausted and still hungry, so you eat more!
Food manufacturers use HFCS because it is sweeter (and therefore more addictive), cheaper to produce, and has a longer shelf life than sugar. This means they can increase portion size without increasing cost; and they can also make their products sweeter. This increased sweetness, the effect on blood sugar and the way it is metabolized all lead to more cravings and more fat on your thighs!
The commercials touting HFCS as “natural, same as sugar and fine in moderation” are really well-crafted propaganda.. They are weapons being used against the uninformed in the hopes of extending the ‘shelf-life’ of HFCS. Fortunately, the people are discovering to what extent HFCS is not natural, and that it is not the “same as sugar.”
HFCS is extremely difficult to moderate because it is in almost everything!! If you eat the average American diet, than you probably eat condiments (catsup, salad dressing, bbq sauce), bread, cookies, crackers, pizza, pasta sauce, jam and jelly, (yes, it’s even in jam and jelly!) soups, sodas and frozen foods. These all contain HFCS. Even though you may only drink one soda per day, you are consuming inordinate amounts of HFCS in everything else. The USDA reports that about one-quarter of the calories consumed by the average American is in the form of added sugar, most of which is HFCS. And incredibly, this figure doesn’t even include concentrated fruit juice, sugar alcohol, polyol sweeteners or corn based chemically refined sweetener components like maltodextrin or modified corn starch.
And if you can believe that, realize you’re your children’s food is loaded with HFCS: fruit snacks, candy bars, breakfast cereal, hot cocoa, pop-tarts, chips and fruit drinks all have HFCS. Even “healthy” foods like granola bars, flavored oatmeal, trail mixes and some juices have HFCS. Shockingly, some baby formulas now contain HFCS too!
HFCS is harmful and should be eliminated from your diet and your children’s diet. You can’t wait for the powers that be to clean up our food supply, please start now by doing the following:
- Start checking the labels of all the food that you buy. If it has HFCS, don’t buy it!
- Educate yourself about HFCS – you will be surprised just how bad it is.
AND PLEASE
- Sign our petition to ban HFCS at www.skinnycoach..com
