Watercolor Technique – The Watercolor Palette
Choosing the right paint colors is an important part of the process of watercolor painting. In fact, building your watercolor technique begins with the color palette.
Palette is the term for a specific selection of paints (or “colors”). Even though you can purchase hundreds of colors in tubes, blocks, or bottles that are commercially mixed and packaged, you really only need a small number of basic colors, and from those you can mix the entire range of colors. For sure it is much more economical, and many artists think that it is also more convenient.
Historically, a primary palette consists of four to six colors. Technically, you can use the three primary colors to get all the rest – that would be red (technically this is magenta), blue (cyan), and yellow. However, the mixture of these colors may give a somewhat muted or washed out look to some resulting colors, so the addition of a deeper blue rather than just the cyan, and perhaps a purple, a red-orange, and of course white and black may round out a nice primary palette. Oh, and many artists will add a shade of green just for convenience.
Contemporary artists may use a six color palette with the following selections:
- yellow: Cadmium Yellow Pale (PY35 or PY37) or Benzimidazolone Yellow (PY151 or PY154)
- red orange: Pyrrol Orange (PO73) or Cadmium Scarlet (PR108)
- magenta: Quinacridone Magenta (PR122) or Quinacridone Rose (PV19)
- blue violet: Ultramarine Blue (PB29)
- cyan: Phthalo Turquoise (PB16) or Phthalo Cyan (PB17)
- green: Phthalo Green (PG7 Blue Shade or PG36 Yellow Shade)
As a matter of convenience, experienced artists in watercolor painting typically also add one or more paints made with an iron oxide pigment (the so called “earth” pigments) and sold under the marketing names yellow ochre, raw sienna, raw umber, burnt sienna, burnt umber and/or venetian red. Exactly the same brown or ochre colors can be matched with the six paint palette shown above, but it is tedious to do. As dark colors also require inconvenient mixing, most painters prefer to add a premixed dark neutral paint containing a carbon (black) pigment and a tinting pigment to produce a slight color bias, usually sold under the marketing names indigo, payne’s gray, neutral tint or sepia.
