Build The Best Hunting Camp For Your Guests With A Great Fire Pit
The smell of a crackling fire greeted us after a long day of hunting. After putting the venison on the spit we grabbed some chairs and gathered around to swap stories. Our hunting camp had become the place to be, thanks to the addition of our fire pit. We watched the embers burn down almost to ashes, reflecting on the day that had been, before turning in for the night.
A good fire pit in your base camp can make your hunting experience significantly more enjoyable. Too many hunters settle for returning to a hotel in the evening, their reminiscing done over drinks at a bar or in a bland hotel lobby. Hunters who spend their evenings in a camp are far more likely to have a satisfying experience than those who return to a hotel. The act of living out in nature during a hunt connects the hunters with their primal roots, hearkening back to the days when hunting parties went out on journeys to secure food for the village. The connections that are built during such a hunt will be remembered for years to come: hunters who camp often feel a real union with the earth, the wildlife and their fellow campers. The bonds of friendship are so strong that many hunters will return for years to come, in the hope of building new memories and new friendships.
The key to establishing a good deer camp is a small clearing within a more heavily wooded parcel. This ensures better protection from the wind and elements and lends a more authentic feel to the camping experience. There are two common camp accommodations – the standard tent and the more permanent cabin-type structure. The “cabin” does not have to be a home-away-from-home; most are very basic, like my friend who converted an old yellow school bus into a place to bunk down for the night. His “pad” quickly became one of the most popular places to stay – that tough steel frame meant no more worries about late night visits from the local bears! A fire pit is also an essential part of the experience. You can protect the lease owner for who’s land it is you are on with a full fire pit instead of a make shit campfire. It’s also handier for cooking meals. In several surveys, hunters who were able to cook their meals over a large fire pit or campfire reported a higher satisfaction rate than those who did not.
So add a fire pit to your campsite, and see for yourself the increased pleasure it gives to hunters as they return year after year to hunt on your property.
