Looking Back At The Cuckoo Clock

It may live on your wall. It tells you the time. Every hour, a little bird comes out and sings for you. Did you know that the history of this small bird goes back many centuries? In order to understand it, you may need to travel a long ways into the past. Pretend that your cuckoo clock is actually a time machine. Mentally enter the little doors. You may see yourself traveling in time.

Your first stop is around the year 800. You see that you are in the presence of some important people. The caliph of Baghdad is presenting the emperor Charlemagne with gifts. One is an elephant. Pay attention to the other gift. Do you see an odd looking mechanical device? Each hour, a mechanical bird announces the time. Who the inventor is, is still a mystery. However, it is the start of an amazing journey.

Time for the next stop. You find yourself in the year 1350, in France. You will notice that normal clocks are not seen. Time telling devices are very large and public. You may see them at churches. They also do not have hands and faces that you can recognize. All they do is let you know, when each hour arrives. Do you see that very large cathedral. In front, is a way to tell the time. Every hour, a mechanical rooster flaps his wings. He crows and lets you know it is the top of the hour. This is quite a ways from the modern day items that may hang on your wall. Yet, they are evolving.

It is time for another stop. Welcome to the 1600s. Europe is seeing mechanical cuckoos at this point. They are fashioned into time telling devices. Before too long, they will become well-known. At this point, any craftsman will have knowledge of them.

They are becoming more prevalent by the 1700s. By mid century they have found their way into the Black Forest part of Germany. This area is famous for them. Many believe that they started here. This is not the case. It is possible that traders brought them to the Black Forest. In a short time, this area becomes famous for clocks with cuckoos. Many are being made, by now.

Although the devices do not start here, there are many tales about it. Many of them are interesting and fanciful. Of course there is no proof, as to who invents them.

Before long you will see them become the well-known items in homes today. They appear as little houses. They have distinctive faces and hands. The little door for the bird is just above the hands. Every hour, you will see him, and hear him sing. If it is twelve o’clock, he will sing twelve times. The Black Forest still makes this amazing thing, today. They have a lot of experience. They never stop improving them, too. Today, there are battery powered units, that you do not wind. There are some with quartz movements, too.

Final thoughts

The cuckoo clock has come a long ways to get your home. It is more than a thousand years, in development. It starts out primitive and large. Today it is a delightful wall adornment. When your little bird tells you the time, remember how long he has journeyed.
