Good Communication Holds The Key To Internet Marketing Success

When you first start to get into IM and explore the waters a bit, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. As you browse through forums and articles, you’ll discover all kinds of lists about what you should do to be the next big thing. The items on these lists probably all appear conflicting. One list will say “patience” is the secret to succeeding in the IM field. Another is going to tell you that you need to have lots of business savvy. Still, another will tell you that creativity is what will get you ahead. And, of course, there are going to be dozens of sales pages claiming they have the software or course to teach you how to be the next big thing.

The truth is that all of these things are essential to your success (well, perhaps not all of those software packages, but the other stuff). You must have patience, business savvy and creativity if you wish to be successful. Of course, if you can’t clearly communicate with buyers and clients, none of the rest of it will actually matter.

Good communication means more than just having a great sales page. All you need for that is the money to hire a seasoned copywriter. Good communication is more than having a stunning site with an extensive FAQ area. A seasoned designer and writer can do those things. Being good at communication takes learning to handle interpersonal communication as well as your copy and site. How do you get that?

1. Don’t let an e-mail sit unreplied to for more than 24 hours. This is not a joke. You don’t have to write a long note for each mail. All you have to do is write a quick note that says something like “I received your e-mail and will be sending you a full response shortly.” It is a good idea to include text that references something the original emailer has written. This is what will tell the person that you actually care about them and are not an autoresponder.

2. Pick up the phone. Don’t screen calls. You should always try to answer the phone by the third ring. This is true even if you REALLY don’t want to talk to the person on the other end of the line. There is, however, an exemption to this rule. You don’t have to be attached to the phone all day and all night. Instead, just set definite “business” hours during which you plan on being available to talk on the phone. Publish these hours on your site and in your voice mail message as well. And, obviously, every person who leaves a message deserves a call back.

3. Ensure that the individuals you send messages and emails to really have received those emails. This indicates to the your customer that you value him or her. You’ll endear yourself more with the people you work with and who buy your products if you ask them if they have any questions and follow up to see to it that  they understood  the  points you  were  trying  to  make.
