Facts About Mixed Martial Arts

The first family of Jiu-Jitsu launched the Mixed Martial Arts in the United States. They had the best martial artists in different disciplines go up against each other on the same level playing field. The reason was to determine which discipline was the best one.

The first event was the Ultimate Fighting Championship and started at McNichols Arena in Denver, in the year of 1993, Colorado. The smaller Royce Gracie won against a larger, faster and stronger opposition with his skill in Jiu-Jitsu to win the tournament. This sport became a success, as a, result.

It became must see TV for many fans of the sport but because of the set of rules and state law the show did not last long on cable. The Las Vegas, Zuffa LCC took over in 2001. They enforced a number of different rules for the sport and MMA was not just a show, but a sanctioned sport. Mainly due to the Athletic Control Board, that drafted the rules as the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, which is who the sport is now governed by.

As the sport started to grow, and so have the number of people in the sport, knowing just one style will not be enough to compete at that level. Meaning that the athletes needed to learn more than one style that was different to their own, which includes wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, and jujitsu to go up against their likely opponents.

The Unified Rules of MMA, require the athletes to compete in rounds of three to five minutes, and the championship rounds are five-minute rounds done five times. Scoring system is on a ten point scale. The winner will receive the top ten points, and the loser will receive nine. The difference in Mixed Martial Arts, to boxing, is they are not just scored on the effect of the striking attack, but they are also scored on ground fighting effectiveness, takedown, submission, defense, attempts, and the ring generalship.

Ending a knockout can be done by a bout as well as a referee, submission, problem or a doctor stoppage. A bout ends by submission because the fighter has spoken and/or physically taps out, to say that they have had enough.

In this sport, the athletes need to know every discipline and they can range from Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, Kung Fu, and Sambo are all part of the sport. An athlete can only be quite successful if they have the skills in the following: Boxing, Braxilian Jiu-Jitsu, Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do.

Mixed Martial Arts, covers all these sports and compiles it into one event, with competitors coming in to take on the sport and all its verities. Being trained in other sports will be an advantage as it will help you get to the final stages of the rounds.

As this sport, has struggled to get air time after the changing of the rules it returned to cable to a national wide audience. Now it also offers twelve to fourteen live pay per viewed events yearly via satellite and cable providers.
