A Guide to Varying Copper Sheet Thickness
The thinnest is the 1 mil copper sheet (0.001 inches thick). This is a very thin copper sheet, but is, on average, 1.5 times thicker than ordinary aluminum foil. Obviously, this copper sheet is easy to cut, but is also very easy to wrinkle. Next is the 1.4 mil copper sheet (0.0014 inches thick). This is also a very thin copper foil, just slightly thicker than the 1 mil sheet. The 1.4 mil copper foil sheets are approximately twice the thickness of a household aluminum foil. It cuts easily, can be torn by hand, and also wrinkles to the touch. The 1.4 mil is often used in paper crafts, scrapbooking, and also for electrical, manufacturing, and research and development applications. A 3 mil copper sheet (0.003 inches thick) is thin. It is approximately two times as thick as a 1.4 mil and 3.5 times that of an aluminum foil. It can be cut easily with scissors, and torn or wrinkled by hand. A 3 mil is used for various arts and crafts and electrical purposes. The 5 mil copper sheets (.005 inches thick) are approximately 7–8 times thicker than a typical household aluminum foil and weighs approximately 3.74 ounces per square foot. This copper sheet is also often described as a 36 gauge and is a traditional tooling copper foil. The 36 gauge does not tear by hand, but cuts easily with scissors. The 5 mil copper sheets are often used for embossing, tags, die–cuts, other craft projects, as well as for various home improvement applications. The 8 mil copper sheets (.008 inches thick) are approximately 11–12 times thicker than the typical household aluminum foil and 1.5 times thicker than the 5 mil sheet. This is sometimes referred to as the 32 gauge and is a heavy-duty copper foil. The 8 mil can be cut fairly easily with scissors and is very pliable. It also holds its shape little better than the 5 mil, but will not bear much weight. There are also 10 mil, 16 mil, and 22 mil copper sheets. Beginning with the 10 mil, these copper sheets begin to look less like foil and begin increasing their response to pressure. A 10 mil is rather thin, but more rigid than the thinner materials. The 10 mil and above copper sheets also begin to hold weight and maintain shape significantly better than the previous materials.
