Things You Must Know about Batik

Batik is a great traditional technique that combines arts and crafts. It is so popular not only in Indonesia as its origin but also in the world. Recently, batik has been declared as world heritage by UNESCO. From its contextual meaning, batik is just a type of technique to decorate cloth. However, if compared with modern printing techniques, batik is more complicated because it uses wax and dye. In Indonesia batik has been recognized for centuries. In Java, especially Solo and Jogjakarta, batik has become an important part of an ancient culture and tradition. The batik from those two regions is influenced by the existence of the court. Up to today, batik from those two regions becomes one of the most popular not oly because of its quality but also patterns and creativity. Even, the word batik itself was taken from anonym of two Javanese words, which are “ambatik” from the words “amba” that means large and “titik” means dots.

It is not easy to make batik. The first step has to be done is blocking out selected areas of the cloth by applying hot wax and then, after it is finished, the cloth must be dyed. The part of the cloth that has been covered with wax will resist the dye and it remains the original color. The process of dye and waxing can be repeated several times to produce more colorful and elaborate designs. When the final dyeing is done, the wax must be removed. When the wax is totally cleaned up, it means the batik is ready to sell. For contemporary batik, the process and the tools used are different with the traditional. The steps are simplified and some manufacturers have applied modern tools. In the contemporary batik, manufacturers or artists use discharge dyeing, etching, stencils, different wax recipes and many more. They also use many different types of cloth to improve value such as cotton, silk, leather, wool, paper or sometimes ceramics and woods.

If you visit Indonesia, Java region especially, there are thousands of batik stores and market available. One of the biggest is Pasar Klewer is Solo. The traditional market reflects the ancient culture of batik that has stand for centuries. Solo and Jogjakarta are able to keep the decorating cloth tradition, especially because of their courts or called “kraton”. However, there are also other regions in Indonesia have batik cultures. Each of them brings different techniques, patterns and designs.

Today, the traditional cloth art has been brought to the new era. Now, we can find so many products with the traditional patterns of batik. Baju batik or clothes are the main popular. Then, there are also kaos batik or t-shirt and batik bag. They come in various designs and prices that can be found easily in Indonesia, especially in Java.
