Remembering the Works of Diego Velasquez, one of Spain’s Master Painter
In terms of art method, painting is quite unique in that it has the capability to change a plain canvas into a poignant masterpiece; it’s not a wonder that many people are touched by paintings. Paintings can also be a form of symbolism, political agendas, or can also become a story in nature.

There are so many Spanish painters, who have left a legacy in the world of painting and during Spain’s El Siglo de Oro, or Golden Age, a lot of Spain’s most magnificent painters emerged. One of the many painters who made Spain famous in the world of visual arts and who contributed much to the art of painting is Diego Velasquez. Diego Velasquez was known to have found friendship in the courts of King Philip IV because of his much skill as a painter especially of portraits.
Much of Diego Velasquez’s childhood was not something out of the ordinary; he was brought up with five other children and was the first born of the brood. He presented some skill in art and at the age of eleven, he was granted an apprenticeship in the studio of the great Francisco Pacheco who trained him and helped him hone his skills as a painter. He later selected as his wife the daughter of Francisco Pacheco and supported his new family through his paintings, and because of his greatness in painting he was able to earn enough money to buy a good house and another house to be rent out.
Diego Velasquez’s career was distinguished by numerous masterpiece of exceptional artworks in the realistic style which gave him a lot of attention; something that not a lot of painters enjoyed during his time. He produced an unparalleled work named Surrender of Breda, illustrating the victory of Marquez de Spinola, he created the piece shortly after meeting Spinola and when it was given to Spinola, he was stunned; Spinola cannot believe how brilliant Velasquez was and his ability and skill to capture and let the painting express its emotion. Another creation which could be the most famous one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; uniquely, he painted himself inside the artwork, quietly working on a canvas at the background.
There are other painters considered to be masters like Diego Velasquez, but the fact still remains that Velasquez was ahead of his era, and that he had shared much to realism through his many reknowned pieces.
