The Do’s And Don’ts Of Proposing Marriage

One of the most romantic and memorable moments in any woman’s life is when her husband proposed to her. (Conversely, a lot of men remember it as the most anxious moment in their lives – will she say yes?!) Given the importance of the event, spend some time coming up with a romantic way to ask her to marry you. Discover what make a proposal great…or not so great.

If you want to wow her, plan a dramatic proposal. When you are an old married couple, she will still remember the wonderful proposal that started it all. She will also take great delight in sharing the story with her friends and family when she shows off the wedding jewelry that you gave her. The brownie points you will score with her family are also a good thing.

What makes for a terrific grand gesture? Taking care to come up with a plan that will delight her. When beautiful flowers make her swoon, propose to her while strolling through a beautiful garden. If she goes to every baseball game, arrange for the stadium folks to display, “Susan, will you be my wife?” over the big screen at the ballpark. When she loves going to the shore more than anything, write “Will you marry me” in huge letters on the sand. Your girlfriend will not be able to resist such an impressive proposal.

A wonderful time to ask your girlfriend to be your wife is during a moment that is already special. It is a joyous time already, so asking her to marry you then just feels right. It is for this reason that the time beween Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is often referred to as engagement season. A romantic trip can be the ideal time to pop the question. In fact, it was while on a trip to Kenya that Prince William proposed to Princess Catherine – if it’s good enough for the royals, surely your girlfriend will be delighted. Think about what is special to your girlfriend. Have a girlfriend who loves the great outdoors? Ask her to marry you while on a camping trip. If she loves shopping, you could pop the question in a jewelry store, and then ask her to pick out her favorite piece of wedding jewelry to be her engagement ring (arrange in advance with the store for them to show her selections in your price range).

Now you know what makes a proposal great, but what about what makes a proposal bad? The worst proposals are those that seem insincere. Do not ask her to marry you right after an argument, or it may look like you are just trying to get out of trouble. It helps to think about exactly how you will ask the question. Don’t expect your girlfriend to swoon if you ask her to marry you so you can get on her health insurance plan. Popping the question while waiting for your food at a fast food drive through is also not romantic!

It really does not take much effort to create a romantic marriage proposal. As long as you choose your words carefully and put a little thought into setting the scene, it is sure to be perfect. With such a perfect proposal planned, it will be smooth sailing ahead!
