Wedding Dress Burst Into Flames At The Alter
Julie Turnbuck, 34 from Tiverton in Devon, England had the shock of her life last Saturday after her wedding dress caught fire and had to be removed at the altar to avoid burning her skin.
Julie who had been planning her marriage to Peter Huntington for over a year and had spent over £25,000 of her savings on making the big day one to be remembered forever. She definitely got her wish when shortly into the ceremony at St Paul’s Church, a misplaced candle caused the dress train to catch fire and the flames rapidly spread up towards the main garment. Some close by friends and family tried to rip the train from the dress to halt its progression but the fire was too hot and many burnt they fingers. Thinking quickly, Peter told Julie to take the dress off and she managed to struggle free from the blazing dress just second before it was completely engulfed. Guest hats where eventually used to put the flames out by bucketing water from the baptism bath.Water was also poured over the church pews as these looked like they might fall victim to the flames also at one point.
Julie had inherited her dress from her late grandmother, Martha Wintbury, who wore it on her wedding day back in 1931. It was made before there were regulations on fire-retardant material for clothing and it turns out the choice of material for this dress was a very bad one. One fire officer who attended the scene said that the material must have been very flammable to go up so easily and he also suggested that anyone else who wears a handed down garment should check first to make sure it is fire-safe. Julie was lucky to only receive minor burns according to the fire officer. “once you get stuck in a piece of clothing that is alight, it is very difficult to remove and deep burns usually occur”. fortunately Julie was wearing undergarments so was not too embarrassed and managed to make it to the after wedding reception venue
Peter can certainly sympathise with Julie as he has suffered a fierily incident himself when in a strange coincidence his hair gel went up when he was working on a car during his job as a mechanic. There were not flames for long but it still left him with some scares to show. The couple are planning to reschedule the wedding for this summer and are looking into castle weddings. They promise to keep anything flammable away.
